About Me
My name is Andy Askey. I’m a retired software engineer with over 40 years of experience, and—like many of us—I didn’t expect retirement to include two strokes and a stay in long-term care at St. Joseph’s.
I started The Stroke Life mainly for my friends and family—people I’ve known from high school, college, the Army, my engineering career, and now here at St. Joe’s. This blog is my way of keeping everyone in the loop while also giving my brain a regular workout during recovery.
A big part of my focus lately has been nutrition and how it affects mental clarity, energy, and healing. I use AI to analyze the meals served here by photographing my plate and breaking down the vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber, and overall balance. I’ll share what I learn as I try to answer a simple question: Is this food actually helping my recovery?
I’m also working with Dr. Parker to track blood levels of key nutrients and explore supplements where my body may not be doing its job efficiently. I’ll pass along anything useful—what helps, what doesn’t, and what I wish I’d known sooner.
If you’re reading this as a friend, family member, or fellow resident: this is just me thinking out loud, learning as I go, and staying engaged with life. If others find it helpful too, that’s a welcome bonus.
I’m also teaching myself WordPress as I build this site, so consider it a work in progress—just like me.
This blog reflects my personal experience and is not medical advice.
